The importance of research in Design
Design is research. One of the biggest mistakes a designer can make is start a project without researching and understanding more about the project.
As designers, anything we create will be used for a large number of people that we have never seen before, and that are likely very different from us.
How can we be sure that our decisions will solve these people problems? What do people do and why do they do it?
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
Prioritize quality over quantity.
Try to focus on a small group that represents the user well. Try to talk to them, really talk to them, looking into their eye and spending some time with them. Immerse in their lifestyle, discover how it is to live through their eyes.
Don't make assumptions.
When you make assumptions about your audience, you risk being wrong. Remember the TV Show House, it reminds us why we shouldn’t ask directly to people what we want to find out.
House unraveled the most complicated diagnoses through the following thought: everyone lies.
When we question our habits, even if the lie is not conscious, it is easier for us to say what we would like to do instead of what we actually do. So our job as a designer is to ask the right questions and look at the details that matter the most.
Beginners mindset.
When you don’t know anything about a subject, you’re less likely to make assumptions.
Spend a day in the life of the user.
Malinowski was the creator of participant observation, after living one year with Trobrians Island natives and watching their behaviours.
Do the same to investigate your user’s lifestyle closely. Our behaviour changes according to the context, so it’s important to observe the user in their daily environment.
Search for imperfection.
From day to day problems that great ideas are born. Look at your users life closely and search for imperfections and problems. These details will help you to create a persona later.
